Now that the holidays are over, there really isn’t a whole lot to do until spring comes around. Regardless if the groundhog saw his shadow or not, spring is still pretty far out and the cold weather doesn’t help make things more pleasant. So what’s the best way to thaw out those winter blues? How about Chili and Chums?

The idea behind Chili and Chums is pretty simple.  A family is in charge of hosting the event at their home, usually providing bread and beverages. And the chums…well they bring the chili of course.

How this tradition became known is unclear. The most logical explanation would be that there really isn’t much to do unless you’re into winter activities. So for those of us who aren’t hanging around outside this time of the year, spending time with friends and family over a hot bowl of chili is a great alternative.

The fun doesn’t stop there though. Whether you plan on making your mother’s secret recipe or a friend attempts a spicy experiment, your “chums” will be on their toes knowing that their chili will be voted on. As the host, making your own categories gives a chance for everyone to have a shot at being the best. Oh, and prizes are a must.

Obviously your kitchen should be able to handle your Chili and Chums event, but keep in mind that every year you host, you should expect more and more people to come. Getting all close and cozy is great, but at some point updating your kitchen might not be a bad idea so you can accommodate everyone comfortably.

So stop thinking about it, get out your crock pot out, round up your chums and chill out with some chili. Good luck!
